This is the second product I’ve tested by Daemon Power, following on from the Super Greens Powder. I used to take a magnesium supplement back in the day, in the form of a ZMA (zinc and magnesium) when I was into weight training, as I wanted it to help with muscle recovery and improve my sleep quality.
So let’s dive into the nitty-gritty…
What’s Actually Included?
You’ll never guess what’s inside…Plenty of magnesium! If you were to take the 3 capsule serving recommendation, that would be 750mg (110.75mg elemental magnesium contents).
But magnesium is the more blanket term, they’re slightly different types and each one provides a slight variance on different factors like the absorption rate and what use they offer.
The greatest quantity is magnesium citrate, then equal amounts of l-threonate and chloride, followed by glycinate.
One thing I’m particularly keen on is that they state the exact quantities of each form of magnesium. Some cheap knock-off brands don’t state this, potentially as they don’t know the exact breakdown, or they’re looking to cut corners. For example, magnesium oxide is a cheaper form sometimes placed in multivitamins so they can tick off the magnesium box, but it’s not absorbed as well by the body.
Do I Need Magnesium?
This is all down to your personal situation. I strongly recommend people get all of their macro and micro nutrients through a healthy balanced diet, rich in vegetables. You can get magnesium naturally from beans, spinach, avocado and nuts.
But for some, it can be hard to get the required amount per day. According to the NHS, a male should get 300mg per day, while a female should get 270mg.
A whole avocado would have around 58mg, while you might get around 80mg from a portion of nuts (almonds and cashews are a great source). But if you’re struggling to get them through your diet and have a deficiency then supplementation can be a great choice.
My Experience
I’m not the best at taking tablets (last year I finally started, but it’s stepping stones with little ones), therefore I popped open the tablet and mixed it into a glass of water at dinner time each day. The pack contains magnesium citrate which dissolves well in liquid so I wasn’t too worried about this, but in general you’re not really meant to pop open the tablets if you’re better at swallowing.
I contemplated the best time based on my needs, I could have it post-workout to help with muscle recovery, but my main aim was to relieve stress and help me drift off to sleep easier at night, therefore the evening seemed more ideal.
I also didn’t take 3 per day, partly due to me not noticing this on the instructions straight away (oops), so I started with one per day, then upped this to 3 per day after around 5 days.
Christmas was quite a stressful time, not to mention it’s hard to stick to a healthy diet during the festive period, so it was useful to have a supplementation of magnesium.
I really do value my sleep, if I have a bad night, then I won’t be bothered to exercise the next day, I will reach for more unhealthy foods and I’m more likely to give up on the ever-growing list of extracurricular activities I seem to be taking on (why have I got a drum kit in my room now?!).
With 120 capsules in a pack, if you took 3 per day, then it would last 40 days, or it’s a good 4 months worth if you do 1 per day. I’d really adjust based on your personal requirements and whether you feel you’ve got enough magnesium that day from your diet. Below are some useful resources around magnesium supplementation:
You can order a pack of the magnesium complex from the Daemon Power website for £30, while they have plenty of information on their product page if you want to do some further research before buying.
